What is a structural edit?

Before anyone looks at your sentences, someone needs to look at your structure. A structural edit is that first, essential layer of professional editorial attention — and often the most revealing.

A structural edit — sometimes used interchangeably with developmental editing, though the terms can carry slightly different emphases depending on context — focuses on the overall architecture of a manuscript or document. It examines how the work is organised, whether the pacing serves the reader, whether the argument or narrative logic holds, and whether the whole hangs together as it should.

In practice, a structural edit looks at the big picture: how chapters or sections are sequenced, where the work gains and loses momentum, whether the opening earns the reader's attention, whether the ending delivers on what was set up, and whether any sections are overwritten, underwritten, or simply in the wrong place. For non-fiction, it also considers whether the argument is constructed logically and whether evidence and examples are placed where they will have the most impact.

The reason structural editing comes first in the editorial process is straightforward — there is no point perfecting the prose of a chapter that should not exist, or polishing the language of a section that needs to move. Getting the structure right before working at the sentence level saves significant time and prevents the frustration of reworking writing that has already been carefully refined.

A structural edit is distinct from a manuscript assessment in that it involves active editorial intervention rather than evaluation alone. Where an assessment identifies structural issues, a structural edit works through them — providing specific, actionable guidance on how the architecture of the work can be improved.

Structural editing is for authors with a complete or near-complete draft who want professional guidance on the shape of their work before moving into the finer layers of editing. It is the edit that determines what the final work will actually be.
