Social media growth strategy for authors
A complete playbook for growing followers and selling books as an author.
Pro Tip: You can use this growth playbook for non-fiction and other fiction genres with a little bit of tweaking.
Growth Strategy
A suggested playbook for growing followers
and selling books as an author.
Phase 1: The Hook
Month 1
→ Post 3× per day across platforms for the first 2 weeks. Volume creates momentum.
→ Use trending audio on TikTok and Reels. The algorithm rewards it immediately.
→ Pin your single best post to your profile grid and top of Twitter, TikTok and Instagram.
→ Lead with mystery: share fragments of your world, never the full picture.
→ Follow and engage with 20 accounts in #BookTok and #FantasyBooks daily.
→ Your first 1,000 followers are the hardest. Comment generously on other authors' posts.
Phase 2: The Depth
Months 2 - 3
→ Introduce recurring content series. For example: Lore Fridays, Character Confessions.
→ Create a free resource to grow your email list. For example: a character guide, world map.
→ Run a contest to build emotional investment in your book. For example: Name a Character
→ Start a weekly Reader Q&A. It helps to build the connection that drives purchases.
→ Reach out to 5 BookTok or Bookstagram accounts per week for collaboration.
→ Instagram carousels outperform single images by 3×. Start making them. You can keep it simple.
Phase 3: The Sell
Ongoing
→ 80/20 rule: 80% value posts, 20% sales posts. Try not to flip this ratio. It encourages engagement.
→ Screenshot and share reader reactions. Social proof outperforms ads. You can start with just one.
→ Run a 5-day Read Chapter One Free campaign each month, or weekly and ask them for reviews.
→ Layer in urgency. For example: limited-time pricing, signed copies, exclusive bundles
→ Use a sales email sequence triggered when someone joins your list. You can set this up easily.
→ Reach your most engaged followers with a personal DM at launch time. But don’t spam.
Analytics & Optimisation
Weekly
→ Review your top 10 performing posts each week. Double down on that format.
→ Track which platform drives actual book sales via UTM links in your Scheduler.
→ Your best-performing month becomes your template for every month after.
→ A/B test your hooks. For example: same post, 2 different opening lines, 12hrs apart.
→ Reach out to 5 BookTok or Bookstagram accounts per week for collaboration.
→ Repurpose every post. For example: one idea becomes a carousel, and TikTok voiceover
Pro tip
Pin your best-performing post to the top of your social profiles weekly to show social proof.
Pro tip
Reply to every comment in the first hour. The algorithm loves and rewards your hard work.
Pro tip

What if your favourite villain had a point all along?
In [add your book name here], they don't see themselves as evil. They see themselves as the only one brave enough to do what needs to be done.
I wrote scenes where I caught myself cheering them on.
Follow for morally complex fantasy that'll stay with you long after the last page.

People ask me why I write dark fantasy.
The honest answer? The real world already has enough stories where the good guys always win.
The [Add your book name here] is for readers who know it is more complicated than that.
Follow along if that sounds like your kind of book.
